User Guides and Instructions for Use
Etteplan and Philips Healthcare
Since 2012, I have worked directly as a freelancer with the Finnish engineering experts Etteplan, supporting their client, one of the world's largest healthcare imaging system manufacturers based in The Netherlands, to produce Instructions for Use for their image guided therapy systems and software.
This involves IFUs for fixed and mobile interventional X-ray imaging systems, and interventional software tools. These manuals meet various regulatory standards worldwide. They are written and maintained using XML, and translated for use in hospitals around the world by Philips' expert clinical customer base.
Covid ventilator IFU
In early 2020, as the global health pandemic took hold, I was requested to work with a subsidiary of the global engineering services firm Etteplan, in The Netherlands, to support their client who was rapidly developing a medical ventilator in response to the emerging health crisis.
With a compressed development schedule, I successfully produced the majority of the Instructions for Use for the new medical ventilator in a short 3-week period, providing a baseline for the client to embark on an accelerated regulatory approval process.
European Space Agency - Sentinel Earth Observation Satellites
I was engaged by the consultancy firm Optimise4 to provide technical writing services to the specialist earth observation software company ARGANS.
Receiving content written around the world by European Space Agency teams and suppliers to ESA's Sentinel EO project, I successfully edited, merged and structured content for the Sentinel User Handook and Exploitation Tools dataset, published to a worldwide user base, providing coherent style, comprehenmsibility, and usability.
Education materials
Philips Image Guided Therapy Clinical Education
I successfully developed and produced a Quick Start Guide format for the Philips Healthcare Clinical Education team based in The Netherlands.
This format makes considerable use of XML-based content reuse and efficiency, and has multiple uses for company specialists and clinicians as well as supporting Philips' training curriculums.
Since late 2017, I have supported the same clinical education team to produce a variety of educational materials for customers and internal specialists. Materials include workbooks, clinical procedure guides, training checklists, and video and product demonstration scripts.
Servicing and operation procedures
3di Information Solutions and Hinkley Point C
Freelancing with the renowned technical information experts 3di Information Solutions, I created procedural texts for their client supporting a Commissioning Effluent Treatment Plant for the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station construction project, meeting multiple stakeholder objectives and expectations.
ICU lighting service manual
I successfully supported a business unit of Philips Medical Systems to create service information for a ceiling-mounted lighting and imaging system designed to prevent delirium in hospital intensive care units.
Based on the design specifications, drawings, and several fact-finding visits to Philips' Eindhoven High Tech Campus facility, I successfully created a Service Manual that allowed the company's Field Service Engineers to perform vital maintenance and upgrade activities directly within customer hospital ICUs.
Business writing and handbook creation
Over the last 15 years, I have written many business-related documents for clients including policy documents, procedural texts, business and process handbooks, and bid proposal documentation.
